Mayor’s Greeting
Socrates Kefalogiannis
Mayor of Anogeia
In Anogeia, tradition is not a static imprint of the past, but a living force that shapes the present and guides the future. It is an active memory, continuously woven into daily life through the actions, values, and creativity of our people. At the heart of this timeless cultural identity lies the art of weaving, an art that is not merely a craft, but a means of expression, survival, and collective continuity.
For centuries, the loom has been an inseparable part of Anogeian households. Through it, woven creations accompanied the lives of our people: patanies, vourgies, and countless other objects, all made with skill, patience, and imagination. Weaving was not solely a productive activity; it was a space of creation, social cohesion, and the transmission of knowledge carried above all by the women of our village, who kept this art alive through difficult times.
Today, through the establishment of the Anogeia Weaving Center, we are committed to giving this precious tradition a new future. The Center aspires to be a living space of education, creativity, and innovation; a place where young people can learn the art of weaving, discover traditional techniques and the natural materials of our land, and connect them with contemporary creative approaches.
The Weaving Center is not merely a space for production or exhibition. It is a meeting point between tradition and both the present and the future. Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the weaving process up close, to see the looms in operation, and to understand the value of the handmade object. In this way, weaving is transformed into a living cultural experience, connecting local creativity with modern experiential tourism.
The realization of this vision would not have been possible without the significant contribution of those who love our village. Particularly moving and decisive was the generous donation of Costantza Sbokou, who, with great generosity and deep belief in the value of Anogeian tradition, made an essential contribution to the creation of this Center. Her offering is an act of responsibility and love for Anogeia and for the generations to come.
Our goal is for the Weaving Center to serve as a nucleus of culture and creativity: a space that supports women creators, draws on local raw materials, elevates the Anogian weaving identity, and contributes to local development with respect for both tradition and the environment.
Because in Anogeia, tradition is not preserved merely as memory. It continues to be created, to evolve, and to weave the future of our place.
